I am a new painter and right now, I paint what I feel about our planet. Whatever these forms and images are, they come without my seeking them. And, with the exception of the Moonlight in Vermont series which I am working on now, they come in bright colors. I've no idea where I will end up, 2 still-wrapped small stretched canvases sit on a bench near my workroom door, and I have some conté crayons and my mother's ancient pastels. My path to painting was not through childhood drawing, but occurred as an explosion when I was well beyond middle age and after a long career in graphic design and photography. The detonator was color. I was first consumed by Vermilion, and close upon that, by Hooker's Green. But I was not drawn to what is traditionally considered color-field painting because I strongly feel the meaning that can exist in pure color has more to offer than can be shown in a color-field work. Also, I wanted active and identifiable brush strokes. My subject is a living one and I wanted life in the application of the colors. And, in keeping with my subject matter, I frame these rather small images in cleaned and renewed wooden frames found at garage sales.
